70% of the mangrove planters and ‘weeders’ employed by Worldview International Foundation are women from the nearby villages. Here, they are cutting down ‘creepers’, a type of mangrove that was planted several years ago by locals for charcoal production. Now cutting mangroves for charcoal is not permitted by the authorities. WIF is allowed to remove them, and replant different mangrove species that have higher carbon sequestration rates.
