There is one main horse dancing competition, but many smaller 'dance demonstrations' where the horses skills help to drive up it's price and can secure monetary rewards if they are the best dancer. Many horses are just for dancing at weddings and ceremonies.
The horse dances to a bhangra beat, being played by a blind dholki wala.
Nagaur Cattle Fair In Rajasthan takes place annually in January. It only has male calves (bachra) and bulls (bel), no cows. There are, however, female horses and camels allowed. People come from all over North India to buy and sell cattle. Some people come to 'dance' their horses and camels.
I met Mahendra Singh from Haridwar, Uttarakhand who took me around the fair and helped me by telling everyone I am Indian, so they would not hassle me. 09012837793 & 09058793325
